The Chicano philosophy of life is centered around the essence of community, culture, and the deeper connections created through shared experience, allowing for unique perspectives on the value of platonic and community love. No Puedo Imaginar Mi Vida Sin Ti highlights the importance of friendship from a Chicano perspective. In the U.S we have been taught to prioritize romantic, idealistic love. However, love comes in many forms beyond the romantic that provides support, care, and healing opportunities in ways romantic love cannot. No Puedo Imaginar Mi Vida Sin Ti will draw attention to the crucial work of Chicano artists while helping to educate the public on platonic love, and the ways in which values of strength, tenderness, cultural preservation, and spiritual growth are nurtured through friendship. Visitors to this exhibition will become inspired to connect to their and other communities, challenging traditional notions of love, and therefore planting seeds to build resistance to an increasingly hyper individualistic society. 

The story of friendship weaves itself throughout each artwork in No Puedo Imaginar Mi Vida Sin Ti. Oswaldo Cepeda’s work contributes to the perspective of softness and innocence in friendship. Pico del Hierro-Villa’s photography also reflects friendship’s quiet strength while highlighting what it looks like for community to gather in spaces and participate in cultural preservation (celebration of indigeneity). The queer experience is emphasized throughout Pico’s body of work, with this series being no exception. Cal Duran’s installation creates a space for gathering while describing the spiritual growth that occurs in the context of a friendship. Arlette Lucero depicts the spiritual connection friends hold and the immense grief when we lose those sacred ties. Armando Geneyro’s Sin Ti reflects on the process of experiencing grief in action within a community setting. Sin Ti reminds us of the power and strength we hold when we come together. Geneyro’s Mi Vida illustrates the power and strength in community gatherings from a celebratory perspective, drawing attention to our need for gathering across all of life’s experiences. Also present is the preservation of cultures. Cherish Marquez celebrates community by highlighting its members; a work of art that is an act of platonic love in itself. Through their diverse perspectives and mediums, the Chicano artists of No Puedo Imaginar Mi Vida Sin Ti define friendship, each creating out of a deep love and respect for those strong connections in their lives.

La filosofía de vida chicana se centra en la esencia de la comunidad, la cultura y las conexiones más profundas creadas a través de la experiencia compartida, lo que permite perspectivas únicas sobre el valor del amor platónico y comunitario. No Puedo Imaginar Mi Vida Sin Ti destaca la importancia de la amistad desde una perspectiva chicana. En los EE. UU. se nos ha enseñado a priorizar el amor romántico e idealista. Sin embargo, el amor viene en muchas formas más allá de lo romántico que proporciona apoyo, cuidado y oportunidades de curación de maneras que el amor romántico no puede. No Puedo Imaginar Mi Vida Sin Ti llamará la atención sobre el trabajo crucial de los artistas chicanos mientras ayuda a educar al público sobre el amor platónico y las formas en que los valores de fuerza, ternura, preservación cultural y crecimiento espiritual se nutren a través de la amistad. Los visitantes del espectáculo se inspirarán para conectarse con la comunidad, desafiando las nociones tradicionales de amor y, por lo tanto, plantando semillas para construir resistencia a una sociedad hiperindividualista.

La historia de la amistad se entreteje a lo largo de cada obra en No Puedo Imaginar Mi Vida Sin Ti. También está presente la preservación de las culturas. Cherish Márquez celebra a la comunidad destacando a sus miembros; una obra de arte que es un acto de amor platónico en sí misma. A través de sus diversas perspectivas y medios, los artistas chicanos de No Puedo Imaginar Mi Vida Sin Ti definen la amistad, cada uno creando a partir de un profundo amor y respeto por esas fuertes conexiones en sus vidas.

  • Oswaldo Cepeda

    Oswaldo was born in a small town in Durango, Mexico. However, he immigrated to the US at a young age and was raised in rural Wisconsin. Oswaldo decided to pursue his passion for art and felt that to do so properly, he needed to be in a new environment. Given the sprawling hub of opportunity that Southern California offers, Oswaldo decided to move to Los Angeles, where he is now based out of and calls home.

    Oswaldo’s main focus is portraiture; however, his portfolio also showcases his passion for digital art. His portrait work is unique, featuring the abstract lighting techniques that he is widely known for. This ultimately sets his work apart from typical portraiture, often being described as otherworldly, ethereal, and poignantly emotional. He uses his work to convey feelings that cannot be put into words and strives to demonstrate the raw emotions of human nature.

    Oswaldo nació en un pequeño pueblo de Durango, México. Sin embargo, él emigró a los EE. UU. a una edad temprana y se crió en la zona rural de Wisconsin. Oswaldo decidió persiguió su pasión por el arte y sintió que para hacerlo correctamente, necesitaba estar en un nuevo entorno. Dado el extenso centro de oportunidades que ofrece el sur de California, Oswaldo decidió muévete a Los Ángeles, donde ahora tiene su sede y llama a casa.

    El enfoque principal de Oswaldo es el retrato; sin embargo, su cartera también muestra su pasión por lo digital arte. Su trabajo de retrato es único, con las técnicas de iluminación abstracta que es ampliamente conocido para. En última instancia, esto distingue su trabajo del retrato típico, que a menudo se describe como otro mundal, etéreo y conmovedoramente emocional.   • Cal Duran

    Cal Duran is a Queer, Two Spirit, Indigenous, Native, Mixed blood, Latinx, Manito, Mestizo, Chicanx, Indian Artist, and Arts Educator from Colorado. Art has been a portal to channel his Indigenous ancestors, where he slips under an emotional spinning vortex of creation. The makers of his blood flow through him. He channels the artisans, craft-makers, mud-dwellers, star-makers, dream-weavers and earth-brothers and sisters the ones who paved the way and forged the path. His work carries spirit, and his truth is in everything he creates. He has roots that bridge India, Mexico and the Natives of this land. He finds himself exploring parallels between his hybrid identities found in myth, religion, and ritual.

    He has shown altars, installations and artwork in museums and galleries throughout the Denver Metro area and beyond. He continues to honor his ancestors and recently created a room at Meow Wolf in Denver, honoring the Indigenous tribes of Colorado and the Americas. Art was where he could connect and find his heritage. It was through art that he began to connect to his ancestors. He is guided by these ancestors to create altars as beacons of light for the ones beyond this realm.

    Cal Duran es un queer, de dos espíritus, indígena, nativo y de sangre mixta. Latinx, Manito, Mestizo, Chicanx, artista indio y educador de arte de Colorado. El arte ha sido un portal para canalizar a sus antepasados indígenas, donde se desliza bajo un vórtice giratorio emocional de la creación. Los creadores de su sangre fluyen a través de él. Canaliza a los artesanos, artesanos, habitantes del barro, creadores de estrellas, tejedores de sueños y hermanos y hermanas de la tierra, los que allanaron el camino y forjaron el camino. Su trabajo lleva espíritu, y su verdad está en todo lo que crea. Tiene raíces que unen a la India, México y los nativos de esta tierra. Se encuentra explorando paralelismos entre sus identidades híbridas que se encuentran en el mito, la religión y el ritual.

  • Armando Geneyro

    Armando Geneyro is a photographer based out of Denver, CO. He was born in Los Angeles, CA and raised in Lompoc, a city located in California’s central coast. He is a versatile photographer who specializes in events coverage and photojournalism. His passion, however, resides in his street-level photography where connects to his subjects and learn from different cultural perspectives.

    During his time in Denver, Armando helped co-found Theyshootn, a collective of like-minded visual storytellers. As a group, Theyshootn has hosted several events and exhibits in the Denver area, bringing together photography and philanthropy to address a wide array of social justice issues. He currently works for Denver Public Schools’ Department of Mental Health, where he has been employed since 2015. He has also hosted multiple youth photography workshops and lectures within DPS, the Cherry Creek School District, Platte Forum and the Porter-Billups Leadership Academy. He is also continuing his work documenting the lowrider community in Denver and beyond, while working on his long term “God Bless the Block” project.

    Armando Geneyro es un fotógrafo con sede en Denver, CO. Nació en Los Ángeles, CA y se crió en Lompoc, una ciudad ubicada en la costa central de California. Es un fotógrafo versátil que se especializa en cobertura de eventos y fotoperiodismo. Su pasión, sin embargo, reside en su fotografía a nivel de calle, donde es capaz de conectarse con sus temas y aprender de diferentes perspectivas culturales.

    Durante su estancia en Denver, Armando ayudó a cofundar Theyshootn, un colectivo de narradores visuales de ideas afines. Como grupo, Theyshootn ha organizado varios eventos y exposiciones en el área de Denver, reuniendo fotografía y filantropía para hablar sobre una amplia gama de temas de justicia social. Actualmente, trabaja para el Departamento de Salud Mental de las Escuelas Públicas de Denver, donde ha estado empleado desde 2015. También ha organizado múltiples talleres y conferencias de fotografía juvenil dentro de DPS, el Distrito Escolar de Cherry Creek, el Foro Platte y la Academia de Liderazgo Porter-Billups.   • Pico del Hierro-Villa

    Pico del Hierro-Villa is an artist and academic originating from El Paso, TX. They are currently based in Albuquerque, NM where they received their M.A. in Chicanx Studies. Influenced by Chicana Feminist theory and art, they interpret Chicana Feminists’ critical approaches into creating a visual storytelling method that is based on resistance through breaking social borders. Chicana Feminists’ oppositional work, meant to uplift overlooked narratives and communities, led them to create their artistic method to represent stories of Queer and Trans Latinx communities in the SW through visual narratives. Pico is also an independent curator and academic that focuses on Borderlands and Latinx visual arts through their project BorderPlex and other curatorial/written works.

    Both their artistic and academic work has been published in journals and magazines including Hyperallergic. Their work has been and displayed at the El Paso Art Museum, Museo de Arte de Ciudad Juárez, National Hispanic Cultural Art Museum, The Lab Residency Mexico City and 516 Arts.

    Pico del Hierro-Villa es un artista y académico originario de El Paso, TX. Actualmente tienen su sede en Albuquerque, NM, donde recibieron su M.A. en Estudios Chicanx. Influenciados por la teoría y el arte feminista de Chicana, interpretan los enfoques críticos de las feministas de Chicana para crear un método de narración visual que se basa en la resistencia a través de romper las fronteras sociales. El trabajo de oposición de las feministas chicanas, destinado a elevar las narrativas y comunidades pasadas por alto, las llevó a crear su método artístico para representar historias de comunidades queer y trans latinas en el suroeste a través de narrativas visuales. Pico también es un curador y académico independiente que se centra en las artes visuales de Borderlands y Latinx a través de su proyecto BorderPlex y otras obras curatoriales/escritas.

  • Arlette Lucero

    Arlette Lucero is a Denver-based fine artist, professional graphic artist, children’s book illustrator, and Chicana crafter. With over forty-five years’ experience, Arlette has been involved with a number of local nonprofits, schools, libraries, and recreational facilities as a Mentor Teaching Artist including: ArtReach ArtsStreet, Colorado Folk Arts, Journey through Our Heritage, Kidzart, Museo de las Americas, Mizel Center for Arts and Culture, Mizel Museum, Voz y Corazon, Escuela de Guadalupe, Denver Art Museum, as well as a variety of local neighborhood organizations.

    Lucero studied two years of graphic arts through the Community College of Denver, then graduating from Colorado State University with her Bachelor of Fine Arts. Arlette Lucero is a current art educator with over twenty-five years’ experience and is an active volunteer, Education Director, and lifelong member at the Chicano Humanities and Arts Council of Denver (CHAC).

    Arlette Lucero es una bella artista con sede en Denver, artista gráfica profesional, ilustradora de libros infantiles y artesana chicana. Con más de cuarenta y cinco años de experiencia, Arlette ha estado involucrada con una serie de organizaciones locales sin fines de lucro, escuelas, bibliotecas e instalaciones recreativas como artista de Mentor Teaching, incluyendo: ArtReach ArtsStreet, Colorado Folk Arts, Journey through Our Heritage, Kidzart, Museo de las Américas, Centro de Artes y Cultura Mizel, Museo Mizel, Voz y Corazón, Escuela de Guadalupe, así como una variedad de organizaciones locales del vecindario.

  • Cherish Marquez

    Cherish Marquez (b.1989 El Paso, TX, USA) spent her childhood in Sierra Blanca, TX, and her adult life in Las Cruces, NM. Currently, she lives and works in Denver, Colorado. She holds a BA in Fine Arts and Creative Writing from New Mexico State University and an MFA in Emergent Digital Practices from the University of Denver.

    She is an interdisciplinary artist with a focus on digital media. Her work explores environmental justice, mysticism, mental health, queer identities, and healing from generational trauma. Her work operates from a queer Latinx perspective and is heavily subjected to speculative futurism.

    Cherish Marquez (n.1989 El Paso, TX, EE. UU.) pasó su infancia en Sierra Blanca, TX, y su vida adulta en Las Cruces, NM. Actualmente, vive y trabaja en Denver, Colorado. Tiene una licenciatura en Bellas Artes y Escritura Creativa de la Universidad Estatal de Nuevo México y una maestría en Prácticas Digitales Emergentes de la Universidad de Denver.

    Es una artista interdisciplinaria con un enfoque en los medios digitales. Su trabajo explora la justicia ambiental, el misticismo, la salud mental, las identidades queer y la curación del trauma generacional. Su trabajo opera desde una perspectiva latina queer y está fuertemente sujeta al futurismo especulativo.
